Serbian aprons and skirts

The apron is an important feature in all the folk costumes of the former Yugoslavia and in the range of Serbian dolls the apron is used to showcase some wonderful hand embroidery. The dolls pictured below represent just a same sample of the many, largely floral, designs which can be found sewn onto aprons made of velvet, cotton and wool.

The skirt is made of a heavy woven striped fabric which is pleated and has a lot of impact when traditional dances are performed.

For people interested in folk costume Folk Costume & Embroidery has some terrific pictures and information.

The full skirt is sometimes worn tucked into the waistband on either side and is known as the butterfly or fan- tail skirt. When this style is worn the white or cream cotton chemise which is displayed  has some embroidery on it.
