Serbian male dolls

Male dolls from the range distributed by Narodna Radinost are harder to find than the females and are a little less decorative .Of the male dolls the Serbian ones, as shown above, are the most commonly found. The dolls pictured do have some faults which are common to this range, namely the white of the shirt sleeves are a little dirty and faded with age, and the central doll has a small hole in his woollen felt trousers.

The men from the region of Serbia known as  Sumadija wear a vest and jodhpur-like pants made of black, brown or blue woollen felt. The vest is trimmed with braid and a woven red sash is wrapped around the waist. The shirt is often simply decorated with buttons and some embroidery down the front and on the cuffs. Two of these dolls also have bags made of bright red, yellow and green woven fabric. The stockings are decorated with flowers or other designs and sometimes dolls have a black plastic strip around the stockings I presume to resemble the cord  found in the real versions attached to the top of the socks and wrapped around the leg to keep the stockings up. The shoes are made of leather and are known as opanci.
