Croatian dolls

Croatian folk costume is known for its incredible range and diversity and within the Narodna Radinost doll line Croatia has the most variety. The two 8" stockinette dolls pictured represent a costume from the Posavina region which is the area of the Sava river basin in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina that is adjacent or near the Sava river. The dolls wear a simple band of cotton lace as a cap fixed with a ribbon which is usually red but sometimes is pink. They wear heavy cotton blouses with pleated skirts and aprons . Underneath is a petticoat and bloomers. White socks are teamed with shoes which can be red or a natural colour in leather or felt. A woven belt standard to all the Narodna Radinost dolls is used. The blouse and apron are decorated with red floral machine embroidered tape and cotton lace.

When you research the Posavina costume you can not help but be so impressed with the incredible detail and skill of the embroidery and by comparison the version offered by the Narodna Radinost dolls is a little underwhelming in all honesty. Of course these dolls are not high end dolls and were produced in large numbers for a sale at a modest amount.
