Macedonian dolls

This is an 8" cloth over wire armature female doll from Macedonia, and in particular the town of Smilevo in the south west of Macedonia. I have featured this doll in my post on Kimport but I wanted to show her in a little more detail. She is an older Narodna Radinost doll and the quality is really great for an inexpensive doll produced in large numbers. Her face in particular is very well embroidered and the blush on the cheeks adds a lovely touch.  The belt is also well made with the coral bead often found on the Narodna Radinost dolls used for the centrepiece.

The apron, such a feature of many of the Narodna Radinost dolls, is a beautiful hand woven piece with bright red fringing. For people interested in Macedonian costume I can highly recommend Young Brides,Old Treasures: Macedonian Embroidered Dress  edited by Bobbie Sumberg which contains some beautiful photos and interesting essays.
